From 1889 was there at Pollfoss a place to stay for travellers. A real person from Skjåk, Christian A. Hjeltar, take the initiative for this matter. He brought 2 old cabins and placed them together here. The old books of this overnight accommodation give us a good overview. However this is not real, because not everybody could afford himself to rent a carriage with horses to travel in those day’s. Most people have’d to walk when travelled. But for those who could, was it the finest place to stop for a meal or bed and even for food for the horses.
It was a hard job to get a road over the mountains at this time. And even the state as well the province came with help. Fjordingane liked to have a road over the mountains to Stryn and Møringane wanted the road to Geiranger, this was the first builded road in 1889. About 10 years later was the road to Stryn build. Now the time was right to do something with Pollfoss for a bigger and better place to stay. It should become a real hotel and Guesthouse. In 1894 came here the post office and horse station, and a slowly growing amount of guest.
There was a lot of work when a important gast arrived here. In 1905, the year Norway became independent, came the famous writer Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson to Pollfoss. The whole hotel was decorated with flags and tree leaves, witch was normal in those day’s. But he was not the only V.I.P. who felt like home in Pollfoss.
Olav Aukrust came on a regular base to Pollfoss in the last century. But this was not the kind of guest who was Pollfoss most suitable for. The normal traveller was just that, together with the few tourists. But they came more and more, from Norway as from abroad. Because of the rich fish waters and beautiful mountains.
The second owner of Pollfoss, Robert Bøje, was a enthusiast nature lover. He putted cultural fish in to the rivers and waters, and makes them a rich fish area. From this pace of work, today’s guest pick the fruits of.
